About the real Triceratops
Triceratops lived in the Late Cretaceous, around 68–66 million years ago. Its fossils have been found in North America. It walked on four legs and could grow to roughly nine metres long: that is a lot of dinosaur to fit into a garden! Unlike a meat eater, Triceratops was a herbivore, which means it ate plants.
Its name means “three-horned face”. Look for two long horns above the eyes, a shorter horn on the nose and a broad bony frill behind the head. At the front of its mouth was a beak for clipping vegetation, with teeth farther back to cut up tough food.
Scientists think the horns and frill had several possible uses, including defence and display. Triceratops lived at the same time as Tyrannosaurus rex, although Tricky’s friendships and careful planning are part of our imaginary dinosaur world. Try counting his horns together before reading his birthday adventure.
